From a Local Secret to the Gem of Medveđa
Such beauty and untouched nature, which were once known mostly to locals, are gradually becoming recognized by a wider audience. Once people arrive here, they no longer need to rush back, instead, they can relax and enjoy themselves at an easy pace on the newly installed benches and in the gazebos,” explains Dragan Janković from the Tourist Organization of the Municipality of Medveđa.
The project “Protection and Regulation of Mrkonjski Vis,” supported by the “PRO – Local Governance for People and Nature” Programme, has upgraded the area's infrastructure to support the development of sustainable tourism.
We see the development of eco-tourism as an opportunity to enhance what we offer within the protected area of the Monument of Nature, as well as to boost tourism across the entire municipality of Medveđa,” says Mijajlo Minić, Director of the Tourist Organization of the Municipality of Medveđa.
The installation of outdoor seating, gazebos and information boards has enriched the site's offerings and provided a more comfortable experience for a larger number of visitors. The project directly contributes to the local community, as improved conditions encourage longer and higher-quality stays in nature.
Given that the infrastructure is now well-maintained, I expect an even higher number of tourists, and consequently, greater demand for local products. This is extremely important for all of us turning toward rural tourism and developing rural households. In this way, the project directly supports a sector of vital importance to our municipality,” Minić adds.
Dragan Janković estimates that between 3,000 and 5,000 visitors tour Mrkonjski Vis each year.
Nature lovers hike up to 1,070 meters above sea level, where a breathtaking view awaits.”
As part of the project, educational workshops were also conducted to raise public awareness about the importance of biodiversity and sustainable tourism.
The educational activities particularly resonated with young people and children from nearby schools who came to visit. In addition to pupils, hikers and mountain climbers from all over Serbia and neighboring countries visit us regularly,” states Miloš Nikolić, ranger of the protected area.
Led by the Municipality of Medveđa in partnership with the CSO “Center for Children and Youth” from Vrnjačka Banja, the project combines nature conservation, tourism development, and education to deliver long-term benefits for the community.
Rade Perović, Deputy President of the Municipality of Medveđa, sees the project's value in creating new economic opportunities for local residents, primarily through the sale of home-grown agricultural products and the strengthening of rural households, as well as in fostering environmental awareness.
Developing sustainable eco-tourism is exceptionally important for Medveđa, considering we are one of the most forested municipalities in Serbia. We want to keep it that way and ensure tourism grows in complete harmony with nature. By preserving our natural riches and engaging the local community, we are building a sustainable environment for future generations,” concludes Mijajlo Minić.
